I hear the Crawling Chaos that calls beyond the stars.
And they created Nyarlathotep for their messenger, and they clothet Him with Chaos that His form might be ever hidden amidst the stars.
Who shall know the mystery of Nyarlathotep? for He is the mask and will of Those that were when time was not

Lovecraft had quite some talent....... but was it great imagination or did he hear some thing calling at the darkest hours of the night?

Lovecraft was very gifted in his writings indeed. As far as "what or who" was calling him in the hours of the night, there are several factors that come to mind. It could of been a "deity" or some force that was calling him. For things from the great beyond are ambiguous in nature as well as mysterious. Another possibility that could be probable cause is his own mind, Lovecraft could very well had a very interesting creative and vivid imagination and could of created this situation thinking that he was being called. What do you think?

I have been a fan of Lovecraft since I was a teenager. He was a confirmed atheist and materialist. I thinks this helped him in creating the Cthulhu Mythos and the Dream Cycle. He was not hampered by preconceived beliefs so was able to create something that seemed very real; so real in fact that even during his lifetime readers were asking him for copies of the Necronomicon. His reply was that not only did the book not exist, he would never be able to write it. One reason was that it was well over 1000 pages in length and he did not think it would ever be possible for him to actually write something that long that would live up to all the hints and allusions as to the supreme horror it invoked in his stories' characters. This has proved to be the case. I have read several versions of the Necronomicon all claiming to be the real thing. None of them even come close to what Lovecraft describes in his stories. Most are just grimoires of one type or another, most based on Christian models, which is not what he had in mind. Lovecraft also had a strong science-fiction strain running through the Mythos, something a lot of people seem to ignore. His stories often tie magic to advanced mathematics as well as as quantum physics and relativity theory, both of which were very new in his lifetime. The Mythos stories also make it pretty clear that the Elder Gods were a race of aliens and the Great Old Ones were created by them. There is an obvious parallel here to the Christian mythos but Lovecraft anchors his literary creations firmly in material reality.
In my opinion, Lovecraft was a gifted author with a vivid imagination. If his ideas did come from "outside" I don't think he was aware of it. But why look outside? Why not just accept the possibility he was gifted and that he wrote some of the best horror fiction ever?

Very well put, Abbadon, that is what I referred to is gifted is his imagination and writing skills. It is quite amazing how vivid, lucid and creative the human mind can be and HP Lovecraft took his mind to the outer limits. You never know, he could of taken hallucinate drugs before he sat down and wrote his great works.

Actually, Nyarlathotep is probably my favorite Great Old One. He shows up in both Lovecraft's fantasy and Cthulhu Mythos stories, about the only one to make the transition.
